great british insulation scheme

What is this scheme?

Home insulation is a highly effective measure to decrease energy consumption by preventing heat escape through walls and roofs.

However, the initial cost can be prohibitive for many.

The Great British Insulation Scheme  (GBIS) is a government-backed initiative aimed at supporting qualified individuals to install insulation, potentially saving households an average of £300 annually on energy bills. The scheme is expected to assist approximately 300,000 people, offering free or subsidized insulation costs.

Distinguishing itself from previous programs, the Great British Insulation Scheme places a stronger emphasis on aiding those with lower incomes and extends support to more households residing in the least energy-efficient homes nationwide.

What does GBIS funding cover?

The Great British Insulation Scheme will primarily implement affordable insulation upgrades such as:

  • Internal wall insulation
  • External wall insulation
  • Cavity wall insulation
  • Loft insulation
  • Smart heating controls installation

Approximately 80% of the scheme’s £1 billion budget will be allocated to homes with an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of D or below, particularly those in the lower Council Tax brackets.

Furthermore, 20% of the funds are earmarked for the most at-risk groups, including individuals receiving means-tested benefits or those experiencing fuel poverty
